A Prairie Smoke Sampler
Images with a sampling of the music we like to play
and hope you will enjoy as well.
Picture

Prairie Smoke's Erin Hussey and Rita Koch Thometz recently provided musical delight
for volunteers building a new, fully accessible garden bed
at the Kane Street Gardens.
Unitarian Universalist Reverend Leslie Milles
immortalized the build with this
time-lapsed video, along with a bit of Prairie Smoke music.
Arrangement by Erin Hussey.

Our featured artist, Erin Hussey
Erin has assembled a collection of music arranged for hammered and Appalachian
dulcimers. Here are a few selections. Don't be shy to let her know how much you enjoy them.
Si Bheag Si Mhor
Enjoy Erin's lovely arrangement for the hammered dulcimer
of a 17th century Irish tune whose Irish/Gaelic title means "Small Fairy, Big Fairy".
The Poor Wayfaring Stranger
This time, with her Appalachian dulcimer, Erin delivers a rather haunting arrangement
of an early 19th century lament of a plaintive wanderer on a journey through life.
Hard Times Come Again No More
Here, Erin offers an instrumental reflection on an 1854 Stephen Foster song
that invites the listener of means to consider the plight of those not so well off.
White Coral Bells
is a delightful springtime, children's round. With this arrangement, Erin demonstrates the versatility
of the hammered dulcimer to transform a simple melody into a charming accompaniment for the song.
Play Time
Erin is also a gifted composer. Here is one of her original tunes inspired by her Dad,
a hard worker who always found time for physical activities and playfulness with his family.
Keep On the Sunny Side
Written in 1899, this song was first popularized by the Carter Family in 1928.
Here, Erin adds her own personality to a time honored folk favorite.
This Is My Father's House
is a beautiful prayer-poem written by Maltbie Davenport Babcock with a melody said to be an adaptation of a
traditional English tune. Erin's arrangement is especially suited for the sweet sound of her lap dulcimer.
